Last Saturday 26 students travelled to Sheffield Hallam University to take part in their annual Pop Maths Quiz. Billed as "a non-alcoholic maths pub quiz", the Pop Maths Quiz is now in its tenth year with well over a thousand students from a large number of schools taking part in this increasingly popular event. Teams of budding mathematicians compete for the top spot in each of four age groups: 11 or younger, 11-14, 14-16 and 16-18.

Lawrence Sheriff entered five teams ranging from Year 8 to the Sixth Form. Not only did our Year 9 team win their competition but our Sixth Formers won their section as well. Also worthy of special mention are the three members of the Year 11 team who only failed to win their event on the tiebreak. Congratulations to the winners but thanks to everyone who took part for representing the school in such a positive way.

Following the quiz we were entertained by a mathematics lecture entitled "Murderous Mathematics" given by Kjarton Poskitt, author of a series of books with the same name.

Everyone appeared to enjoy the day and fully appreciated that mathematics appeals to a wide range of people as well as being a great deal of fun.
