PHYSICAL EDUCATION
General Requirements
Physical Education is an integral part of
the total education process. The emphasis in the department is to maintain
and increase speed, strength, endurance, flexibility and body coordination.
Pupils are taught to work in a safe and constructive
manner and learn about how and why their body works before, during and
after exercise.
Pupils are encouraged to develop positive
attitudes to play sport and competitions and understand and cope with
a variety of outcomes. Pupils are encouraged to become aware of the consequences
of their actions on others and the environment and appreciate the strengths
and weaknesses of both themselves and others in different activities.
Pupils are taught to demonstrate knowledge
skills and understanding through physical actions rather than verbal or
written explanations, but at the same time be aware of terminology relevant
to the activities undertaken.
Aims & Objectives
1. To make each pupil aware of their abilities
and appreciate the limitations, capabilities and power of their physique
within sporting activities.
2. To allow each pupil to develop and improve
individual skills and achieve their best in every area of the curriculum.
3. To give the opportunity to experience
a wide variety of activities and situations, interacting and co-operating
with others.
4. To allow pupils to evaluate their own
temperament as player, spectator and official and be aware of sport as
an emotional outlet.
5. To make pupils aware and appreciate the
movement skills involved in sport.
6. To involve pupils in sport during their
school life with a view to continuing interest after school.
7. To provide opportunities for the development
of good standards of conduct, social behaviour and sportsmanship.
8. To instil two ideals:
i. Physical activity is fun
ii. Taking part is more important than winning.

Inter-House Competitions
Within the school there are four houses.
These are called Wheeler, Caldecott, Simpson and Tait. Each full-time
or part-time member of staff is associated with a particular house. Each
pupil entering the school is allocated a house on a random basis unless
parents have a preference. Each pupil wears his particular house tie as
part of the school uniform.
House assemblies are called each month, usually
prior to an inter-house competition whereupon teams can be selected.
Altogether there are 56 separate competitions.
When a team or individual win, their house is awarded five points, second
place is awarded three points, third place – two points and fourth
place – one point. An accumulative total is kept and at the end
of July a student from the winning house is presented with the winning
‘Parents Trophy’.
Scores, results, reports and individual performances
are placed in the ‘Weekly Word’, our school newsletter.
